I always tell students to listen to a couple people having a conversation and mimic the tonal inflections on their guitar.

The best time to do this is while watching a TV show.

If you do this while two people are actually having a conversation in a room they might think you’re a little odd.

The main concept of this technique is the Question & Answer method. You can play a phrase a line as a question and then finish the line as an answer.

This forces you to create phrases instead of running on and on with a line without “taking a breath”.

Example one stays in a zone while example 2 places the question in a lower octave and the answer in a higher octave.

This is a very effective soloing concept that when employed, instantly creates phrases that sound great and makes you sound like a more accomplished player.

Example 1

E |-----------------------------------------------------------------|
B |-------3---5--------3--—-----------------3---5--------3----------|
G |-2h4---4---2-2h4---2h4-2s0------2h4---4---2-2h4------------------|
D |-----------------------------------------------------------4s5-4-|
A |-----------------------------------------------------------------|
E |-----------------------------------------------------------------|

Example 2

E |x---------------------------------------------------------------------|
B |-x---------------—----------------------------------------------------|
G |--2b4-2b4-2b4r2p0------------14b16—14b16-14b16-14b16r14p12------------|
D |---------------------2p0-2------------------------------------14p12-14|
A |----------------------------------------------------------------------|
E |----------------------------------------------------------------------|
