Now that you have an idea of what it feels like to juggle a percussion part with your guitar playing let’s try using the body to add some more flair to our arrangements.

In example 1, I’m using a Rotating motion with my wrist to achieve a percussive strike with my thumb and middle knuckle of my second finger.

With my wrist placed directly above the 6th string I have plenty of room to execute this pattern.

To strum the chords I simply flick my fingers across the strings. My fingers are relaxed while striking the guitar so they are in perfect position to strum the strings.

E|--3-------3------3------3--------3-------3-------|
B|--3-------3------3------0--------0-------0-------|
G|--0-------0------0------0--------0-------0-------|
D|--2-------2-------2-----0--------0-------0-------|
A|--3-------3-------3-----2--------2-------2-------|
E|-----X-x-----X-x----X--3--X-x--3--X-x--3--X------|
E|--2-------2-------2-------0-------0--------0-------|
B|--3-------3-------3-------0-------0--------0-------|
G|--2-------2-------2-------0-------0--------0-------|
D|--0-------0--------0------2-------2---------2------|
A|----------------------------2-------2--------2-----|
E|--2--X-x--2--X-x--2--X--0--X-x--0--X-x--0--X-------|

Example 2 is quite interesting. I’m using my finger to firmly flick across the top of the guitar.

If you don’t hear the articulation of every finger it’s ok. These are a quick burst of rhythms leading to an accented slap across the bottom waist of the guitar.

Immediately following the slap, bring your hand back up to your strings and perform another slap against the strings.

My best advice to you is to practice the percussion techniques first, then practice the chord progression.

You don’t want ot be thinking too much about both at the same time!
