Here’s another progression that takes many cues from Country music.

This time we’re looking at what may be used in a ballad.

The E augmented chord is typically placed prior to the “4” chord for chromatic voice leading.

In the key of E we just play an E aug. chord to resolve to the A. Here’s how the voice leading works:

E aug.: E – G# – B# (C)

A: E – A – C#

You can see from above that the E augmented chord is very close to the A! Two notes move up a half step and it resolves beautifully. The A minor is a “minor 4” chord and leads great back to E.

Am: A – C – E

E: G# – B – E

Again, beautiful voice leading!
