As a guitarist, you spend a lot of time learning horizontal concepts on the fingerboard I.e. scales and arpeggios in specific zones.

If you find yourself in a soloing rut why not think vertically?

Soloing on one string for a little while opens up new phrasing possibilities and forces you to learn the notes on the fingerboard.

You’ll be playing ideas you didn’t even think of before!

In the examples below, I’m using an E minor scale on the 1st string and 3rd string respectively to add a different phrasing to a solo.

You can insert these type of ideas anywhere in a song to breathe some new life into it.
