Itā€™s good to have a few licks memorized in your back pocket for some of the more popular keys and chords used in this style.

For example 1, Iā€™m thinking about G Mixolydian as a way to navigate through the phrase and focusing on chord tones.

Iā€™m applying a couple muted notes as well to give the line a little rhythmic momentum. This is typical of Country guitar playing and sounds great.

Just donā€™t apply enough pressure with your fretting hand and youā€™ll have a muted or ghosted note.

I like to lean into these notes more to bring out the percussive quality of the phrase.

If the note is plucked with a finger Iā€™ll ā€œpopā€ the string by lifting it off the fingerboard slightly and allowing it to slap back against the frets.

Ex.1

E|---------3------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------6---5---3------3----------------------------------------------|
G|-0h3h4---4---4---4---5h6---6-5p3---5---3h4----------------------------------|
D|----------------------------------------5---x------5-3----------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------5s3-1---x---1h2----|
E|-----------------------------------------------------------------3---x------|

Example 2 takes advantage of some open strings for a ā€œrollingā€ sound. Itā€™s ALWAYS a good idea to use many open strings in Country guitar.

If youā€™re coming from a background other than Country music this may seem foreign to you.

After mastering the licks in this course youā€™ll have a great idea how to achieve a Hot Country Guitar sound.
