There’s more to strumming eighth notes on the guitar than just straight up and down strokes.

To be more versatile and musical with your strumming technique you need to learn how to syncopate your rhythms to fit the style or song your playing.

The most important thing to remember in this lesson besides staying relaxed – is to keep your strumming hand moving.

DON’T STOP your strumming hand. Its job is to subdivide the pulse so that everything you play is in the groove and has a nice flow.

For example 1, you’ll be playing the down beat of “1” & “2”, skipping over the strings for the downbeat of “3” and playing on the upbeat of “3”, downbeat of “4” and the upbeat of “4”.

Example 2, I’m playing this: 1 2 + (3) + (4) + I’m still subdividing beats 3 and 4 but simply not hitting the strings.

Subdividing and keeping time with the strumming hand is a very natural movement, however when the untrained musician hears a “complicated” strumming pattern they think it involves all these stuttering hand movements.

They never think it’s this natural alternated motion that gets the job done most effectively.
