There are a lot of voicing’s for a major7 chord however …

… in this lesson I’d like to cover the essential shapes you need to play in any given situation by categorizing these voicing’s into 2 groups:

– Large ensemble

– Small ensemble

Large ensemble voicing’s include a group of 4 or more musicians featuring bass, horns, drums and possible keyboard.

Small ensemble voicing’s include unaccompanied solo guitar arrangements, vocalist or a small group of musicians minus a bass.

Major7 chords typically occur as the 1st and 4th chord in a major key and the 3rd and 6th chord in a minor key.

Obviously, you can mix these voicing’s around but by following these guidelines you’ll play the perfect type of chord and fit cleanly into the mix without sounding like you’re stepping on anyone’s toes!
