Van Halen’s Trick And How To Apply It To Your Own Playing…

Alright, we have a tapping workout for you with this Van Halen inspired idea. What else did you expect!

The first half of this tapping sequence starts with a chord progression:

D – A – G – D – C – G

The fingering for this sequence will be a 1st and 4th finger with the first fingering of each string being a 5-fret stretch.

Leading the transition to the next string with a tapped note at the 12th fret will get the string moving and after the pull off to the open string you’re good to hammer and let the fretting and take over.

The last part of this solo is a sequenced pattern that uses a tapped 12th fret note to an open string, followed by two hammered notes (1st and 4th finger) and then a tap once more with 3 reverse hammer-on’s (4th, 3rd and 1st fingers)

Repeat this pattern on EVERY string.

You can incorporate the first idea of this solo into your own playing quite easily if you understand triads. As long as you know the chord that is being played AND you understand how to construct that chord, you can find the notes on the fingerboard and create your own tapping sequences.

This solo needs to be practiced with a metronome after you feel somewhat comfortable with the pattern. Start slowly and eventually play this at a burnin’ tempo.
