The bass guitar looks alike in appearance and construction to an electric guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length.Ā  Bass guitar has four to six strings or courses. The four-string bass is by far the most common.

If you are looking for bass guitar tabs, there are quite a few website online that offer free bass guitar tabs. Big Bass Tabs has free and accurate bass tablature of all your favourite artists of every genre and era and new bass tabs are added every day.

Tablature is a way of indicating the positioning of notes and fingering on the guitar fretboard. If you can read tabs, you will be able to play any of your favourites songs.

Basic Tab Lines

There are 6 tab lines representing 6 strings on the guitar.

TheĀ 1st stringĀ is theĀ thinnest, and theĀ 6th stringĀ is theĀ thickestĀ as shown below.

 E|----------------------| String 1 Thinnest
 B|----------------------| String 2Ā
 G|----------------------| String 3
 D|----------------------| String 4Ā
 A|----------------------| String 5
 E|----------------------| String 6 Thickest

Whereas on guitar…

– The string at the top is theĀ thickestĀ –Ā 6th string

– The string at the bottom is theĀ thinnest – 1st stringĀ (as shown in diagram below)

fretboard string numbering

Numbers is placed with examples

When a number is placed on one of the lines, it indicates the fret location of note. Example 1:

 E|------| String 1
 B|---4--| String 2Ā
 G|------| String 3
 D|------| String 4
 A|------| String 5
 E|------| String 6
fretboard string numbering

(This means to play the 4th Fret on the 2nd string)

 E|-------------| String 1
 B|------6------| String 2
 G|--5----------| String 3Ā
 D|-----------0-|Ā String 4Ā
 A|-------------| String 5Ā
 E|-------------| String 6

This indicates:
5th Fret, 3rd string, then
6th Fret, 2nd string, then
an open 4th string.

So, if you see the following tab, you should be able to know how to read the tabs…

 E|-1-----------------| String 1
 B|---------8---------| String 2
 G|-----7-------------| String 3
 D|-------------2-----| String 4
 A|-------------------| String 5
 E|----------------12-| String 6

This indicates:
1st Fret, 1st string then
7th Fret, 3rd string, then
8th Fret, 2nd string, then
2nd Fret, 4th string, then
12th Fret, 6th string.

How To Master Guitar Chords

Free guitar tabs are available online. There are guitar tabs symbols that you will see on guitar tabs for some guitar songs.

Hammer On (h) is produced by hitting a note first, before sliding your finger to another fret while the string is still ringing out.

Pull off (p) is the same as a hammer on – but instead of placing our fingers onto the string, we are TAKING OUR FINGERS OFF the string, after striking it.

Bends (b) are relatively easy to perform. Bends are shown in many different symbols. The b and ^ are common symbols used for bends. The ( ) usually contain a number in between and tell the player to bend to that note. Notes without ( ) usually have the note to be bent to next to the original note.

A bend (b) is carried out by bending the string up on the guitar to produce a sound similar to that of the fret noted on the tab.

A release (r) is done by picking the note in its bent position, but letting go of the string so that it can return to its normal pitch.

The symbol \ signifies a slide down the neck, while / signifies a slide up the neck. The notes are picked in the order in which they appear from left to right.

If you continue to hold the fret down after the slide, or even after picking any random note, it will cause the note to ring. This effect is called vibrato (v or ~) which is fluctuating the pitch of a note.

Tapping (t) is where you tap the string repeatedly.

To perform symbol (x), gently rest a finger of your left hand over the indicated string or strings, and then strum. This will produce a dull, almost scratchy sound.

Fingerstyle guitar is the technique of playing the guitar by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips, fingernails, or picks attached to fingers, as opposed to flatpicking (plucking individual notes.

Here is a video on how to play fingerstyle guitarā€¦

How To Finger Pick

Learning acoustic guitar for beginners is hard at the beginning but once you learned all the scales and chords, and with plenty of practiceā€¦ everything becomes EASYā€¦

There are hundreds of acoustic guitar lessons for beginners available online. Everyone has different views on how to learn to play guitar. There are websites that have different tutors that teach the same thing. For me, I personally prefer to just stick with one guitar tutor to learn how to play guitar so there is no confusion as different guitarists have different style and habits they adopted along the way. So just stick with 1 guitar tutor to learn to play is my best advice for you.

Acoustic guitars for beginners are not different to Classical Guitar. They look the same except Classical guitar used Nylon string which is soft on your fingers when you learn to play guitar.

So what is the 10 top acoustic guitars to choose from?

The best guitar to go for if you are looking at playing Classic Acoustic music is either:

Spanish Classic Acoustic Guitar OR Steel String Acoustic Guitar

Spanish Classic Acoustic GuitarsĀ are extremely light and having nylon strings which are very soft on your fingers.

Steel String Acoustic GuitarsĀ are a little more expensive compared to Spanish guitars. You may want a Yamaha or Fender acoustic guitars for beginners.

Again, with acoustic guitars, there is no need to go for big brands when you are first starting out. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable playing it.

Also, make sure your fingers fit around the guitar neck and it is not too big for you to play. It depends on you as to whether you want pickups or not. But remember to test it first before you buy.

If you are looking at playing rock music, the best guitar to go for is anĀ Electric guitar.Ā The key here is to start small and grow big. I have seen so many people go out and buy the most expensive equipment before they can play anything.

You may have your heart set on getting big names like a new Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster, but the prices are pretty steep.

When choosing your first electric guitar, the best thing to go for is a copy of an original i.e. Plywood. The sound between an original Pure Solid Wood compare to Plywood is a lot better, however plywood is much cheaper.

My suggestion is to go for small brands like Legend, Onyx or Orion for now. Once you have mastered the basics, then it is the time to upgrade.

Second hand guitars are another option to go for. There are some great deals going in the local papers. When looking for a guitar, make sure you plug it in and try it out.

Grab the strap if needed and put the guitar around your neck. Get every possible bit of information you can before making a decision.

Scales play a part in everything we play on the guitar. There is nothing but scales. When you hear a chord, arpeggio, solo, riff or a melody, what youā€™re hearing are notes of a scale or various scales being played in a musical way. I like to think of scales as a painter palette. A painter will have his colors lined up to
use any way he sees fit. His brush is his tool and heā€™ll perform different techniques with this brush to produce various textures and lines.

The painterā€™s brush is your pick and the plethora of techniques he uses can be paralleled with the techniques you use as a guitarist. You can think of every note in a scale as a color. When you do this, youā€™ll hear music a little differently giving more weight to your notes when using them in a musical context. Understanding of your scales is imperative to understanding how music is pieced together.

Many times the novice improviser will play wrong notes during a solo or the songwriter will not know where to go with their song. This is simply because the knowledge of scales is not perceived.

This lesson will build your confidence with the major scale. Below I believe are the 4 most important patterns for a major scale you can learn. They are all 2-octave scales except for the 5th string, 4th finger form. I didnā€™t complete the 2nd octave because it takes you too far away from the original position and the purpose of this lesson is to present these scales in a clear manner and staying in position makes the pattern more manageable. These scales are all transposable meaning you can move these patterns anywhere on the fingerboard. The scale name is derived from the starting note.
